Join NCLA’s Pop Culture Committee and Library Staff of Color Committee for a discussion on the line between appropriation and appreciation. While we always try our best not to cross that line when planning programming in celebration of various cultures and holidays, inadvertent missteps sometimes occur.
We are very excited to welcome our panelists:
• Jeremy Dennis, a contemporary fine art photographer and a tribal member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation in Southampton, NY, who explores indigenous identity, culture, and assimilation in his work.
• Tanisha Mitchell, named a “Mover and Shaker” by Library Journal, who is best known for her innovative work in the arts at the Metropolitan Opera and as the arts coordinator at the Freeport Memorial Library.
• Joy Rankin, who has over 30+ years experience as a Library Director, Librarian, Information Solutionist, Community Archivist/Curator, Fashion and Beauty reporter for Essence Magazine, Media Specialist, Adjunct Professor and Cultural Educator for the African American Museum of Long Island and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum.
